Explore Antarctica on unique routes

A rare Antarctic expedition planned for 2027 will take travelers into the remote Bellingshausen Sea on a 24-night voyage that includes an attempt to land on Peter I Island, one of the continent's most isolated destinations. The itinerary explores the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula, with the route shaped by sea ice, weather conditions, and opportunities encountered along the way.

The voyage follows areas connected with some of Antarctica's best-known expeditions, including the Belgica Expedition of 1897–1899. Operating aboard the ice-strengthened m/v Ortelius and supported by helicopters, the expedition is designed to reach locations that are rarely visited during conventional Antarctic cruises.

Exploring the Bellingshausen Sea

The Bellingshausen Sea remains one of the least-visited regions of Antarctica because of its challenging ice conditions and remote location. A planned highlight of the expedition is an attempt to land on Peter I Island, an exposed volcanic island that is seldom accessible even to expedition vessels.

Daily operations will depend on local conditions, with the expedition team adapting the route as ice, sea state, and weather permit. This flexible approach is intended to maximize opportunities for exploration throughout the voyage.

  • 24-night Antarctic expedition scheduled for 2027.
  • Exploration of the western Antarctic Peninsula and the Bellingshausen Sea.
  • Attempted landing on the rarely visited Peter I Island, subject to conditions.
  • Voyage aboard the ice-capable m/v Ortelius with helicopter support.

Wildlife and historic sites

In addition to remote areas of the Bellingshausen Sea, the itinerary may include visits to well-known Antarctic locations such as Danco Island, Horseshoe Island, and Cuverville Island, along with other potential landing sites where conditions allow.

These areas are home to a range of Antarctic wildlife, including seals, whales, penguins, and several species of seabirds, offering opportunities to observe the region's ecosystems during shore landings and Zodiac excursions.

The voyage also draws on Antarctica's exploration history. Travelers will follow routes associated with Adrien de Gerlache and Fabian von Bellingshausen, the explorer widely credited with discovering the Antarctic mainland. If conditions permit a landing on Peter I Island, the expedition would offer a rare opportunity to visit one of the continent's most isolated locations while retracing part of the path of these historic expeditions.
