An Emperor Penguin has been taken into care after it was found on a beach in Western Australia, setting a record for the species' northernmost sighting.
Emperor Penguins are usually confined to a circumpolar range in Antarctica, predominantly between 66°S and 77°S latitudes. Although native to the Antarctic, about 75% of their breeding colonies are at risk due to rising temperatures. In 2022, ice collapse tragically resulted in the death of up to 10,000 young Emperor Penguins.
The northernmost breeding colony for these penguins is on Snow Hill Island near the Antarctic Peninsula's northern end. Occasionally, they are spotted as far north as Heard Island, South Georgia, and even New Zealand.
However, this penguin's appearance in Denmark, Western Australia, marks the most northern sighting recorded.
Aaron Fowler, who encountered the bird on Ocean Beach, around 430 km south of Perth, shared with ABC, "It was enormous, much larger than any seabird, and we were curious about what was coming out of the water. It had a duck-like tail feature. It stood in the waves and waddled up to us; it was an Emperor Penguin, probably about a meter tall, and completely unafraid."
Dr. Belinda Cannell, a Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, verified that this northern sighting was unprecedented and suggested that the penguin may have followed a current. The penguin is now under care.
Earlier this year, another unusual sighting of a King Penguin in southern Australia made headlines, marking only the third recorded sighting of the species in the country.
