Cruising has seen a significant surge in popularity, as evidenced by recent research from AllClear showing that 66% of people are considering a cruise for their next vacation. The study, which analyzed online search data for over 100 popular cruise destinations, identified Alaska as the most sought-after cruise destination in the US. Alaska emerged as the top trending choice in 39 out of 50 states.
The Alaska cruise season this year is exceptionally busy, with cruise lines experiencing a notable increase in bookings. In January 2024, Princess Cruises reported a record-breaking 20% rise in Alaska bookings, marking the highest in the cruise line's history for this period. Similarly, Holland America Line achieved its best single-day booking record and best booking week in January, with Alaska cruises accounting for a significant one-third of new bookings.
The popularity of Alaska has led ports like Juneau, Alaska, to implement measures to manage cruise passenger numbers effectively, aiming to balance visitor satisfaction with maintaining the local residents' quality of life. Juneau, with a population of around 31,685 residents, can see its numbers swell to over 21,000 on busy weekends due to cruise passengers, surpassing half of the local population.
Following Alaska, the study identified other favored cruise destinations in America, including the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Mississippi River, Antarctic expeditions, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Transatlantic sailings, the Seine River, and the Rhine River.
The World’s Most Popular Cruises
Although the findings specific to the US are intriguing, AllClear's research extended beyond America. The study authors examined search volumes from 44 countries worldwide between April 2023 and March 2024.
On a global scale, Caribbean cruises emerged as the most sought-after, accumulating over 2.8 million searches in the past year. Mediterranean cruises followed closely behind with over 2.1 million searches, while Alaska cruises ranked third with approximately 1.8 million searches.
The ranking of the top 20 cruise destinations based on the number of searches from April 2023 to March 2024 is as follows:
- Caribbean Cruise, with 2,824,180 searches, topped the list as the most searched destination.
- Mediterranean Cruise followed closely with 2,146,670 searches, securing the second position.
- Alaska Cruise garnered significant interest with 1,804,940 searches, placing third.
- Nile River Cruise received 1,025,830 searches, placing it in fourth position.
- Antarctica Cruise rounded out the top five with 969,670 searches.
- Seine River Cruise recorded 695,040 searches, ranking sixth.

However, just as Americans favor Alaska cruises, there are notable preferences varying by country. For instance, Caribbean sailings attract the most interest from Mexico, South Africa, and the UK, while travelers in Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic prioritize cruises along the Nile River.
In Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, potential cruisers are most intrigued by voyages to the crystal-clear waters and coral reefs of their regions. In contrast, Japanese passengers show a preference for "around the world cruises," allowing them to explore multiple destinations rather than focusing on one.
"It's fascinating to observe the growing enthusiasm among travelers for memorable journeys across oceans, seas, and rivers worldwide. From the picturesque Greek islands to the icy landscapes of Antarctica, there's been a remarkable increase in interest in cruising vacations across diverse global destinations in recent years," commented Letitia Smith, Head of Communications at AllClear.
Cruising is increasingly perceived as an accessible mode of travel, particularly appealing to first-time cruisers. Depending on the cruise line, it can also be a budget-friendly option to explore the world. Many modern cruise ships offer all-inclusive packages, and prospective guests often have the option to spread out the cost of their cruise over time through payment plans.
