Notes from the Seventh Continent: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Expedition to Antarctica

Traveling to Antarctica was a transformative experience I hadn't anticipated. While I typically favor sunny destinations with clear waters, Antarctica, known for its extreme weather and icy terrain, initially seemed opposite to my usual travel preferences.

The chance to visit this remote region is becoming more accessible, with around 105,000 people making the journey during the 2022–2023 season, thanks in part to growing expedition travel and luxurious cruise options. Despite its inhospitable reputation, my arrival in late February coincided with a surprisingly glorious Antarctic summer day, where the landscape, instead of feeling desolate, was vibrant with life.

Antarctica's travel season spans from November to March, the southern hemisphere's summer, with cruises typically departing from ports in southern South America. My journey began in San Francisco, with stops in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, Argentina, before boarding the Viking Polaris for the adventure.

Reaching Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, marked a significant moment before facing the infamous Drake Passage. This crossing, known for its rough seas, was surprisingly calm during my trip, allowing for thorough briefings on Antarctic protocols. These include strict environmental measures such as gear decontamination and minimal impact rules to safeguard the delicate ecosystem.

Once in Antarctica, every experience, from witnessing penguins and whales to exploring via Zodiacs and kayaks, was unforgettable. The Viking Polaris, equipped with Nordic comforts like heated floors and a stunning indoor pool overlooking the icy seascape, provided a luxurious base amidst the rugged environment.

Beyond leisure, scientific endeavors aboard the Polaris shed light on environmental challenges like microplastic pollution, underscoring the need for responsible travel. As Antarctica continues to captivate more travelers seeking untouched frontiers, there's a growing imperative to preserve its pristine beauty.

Ultimately, my Antarctic journey wasn't just about exploration; it was a lesson in appreciating and protecting the planet's most remote and vulnerable regions.
