Antarctic Circle New Year Expedition Micro Cruise by Air
Trade traditional New Year's Eve celebrations for the extraordinary stillness of Antarctica on the Antarctic Circle New Year Expedition Micro Cruise by Air, an 11-day journey that brings together remote wilderness exploration, intimate group travel, and the remarkable light of the southern summer. Your adventure begins in Puerto Natales, Chile, with a stay at Weskar Lodge and a Patagonian welcome dinner before a private charter flight transports you to King George Island in approximately 2.5 hours, bypassing the Drake Passage sea crossing. From there, the purpose-designed expedition vessel Aureum becomes your home for an Antarctic voyage limited to 36 guests, supported by six senior polar guides, four Zodiacs, and dedicated photography expertise. The expedition plans seven full days of exploration across the Antarctic Peninsula, where potential destinations include the South Shetland Islands, Gerlache Strait, Lemaire Channel, Wilhelmina Bay, and Paradise Bay. During the height of the Antarctic summer, travelers may encounter active penguin colonies, seals resting on drifting ice, and humpback and minke whales feeding in the surrounding waters. Each departure also seeks to advance toward the Antarctic Circle at 66°33'S, with opportunities to explore frozen channels and possibly walk on sea ice if conditions allow. Scheduled for December 2027–January 2028 and December 2028–January 2029, this small-group expedition offers a distinctive opportunity to welcome the new year amid Antarctica's icebergs, wildlife, and extended daylight.
Day by day
Day 1: Puerto Natales: Your Gateway to the White Continent
Your expedition begins in Puerto Natales, Chile, where the journey from Patagonia to Antarctica takes shape.
Make your way to Weskar Lodge for check-in between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. This is the designated starting point for the voyage and the location of the expedition's initial gatherings.
Before heading south, the expedition team provides briefings introducing the journey and the approach to navigating Antarctica's unpredictable environment.
Rather than promising a predetermined series of landings, the expedition follows a flexible exploration philosophy. Routes and activities are chosen according to weather, ice conditions, wildlife movements, and available opportunities.
As the day concludes, gather at the Weskar Lodge clubhouse for a traditional Patagonian asado.
This welcome dinner officially opens the expedition and provides an opportunity to become acquainted with fellow travelers and members of the polar guiding team.
Day 2: A Scenic Flight into Antarctica
Today marks the planned transition from Chilean Patagonia to the Antarctic region.
A private charter flight aboard a British Aerospace 146 aircraft connects Puerto Natales with King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. The crossing takes approximately two and a half hours.
Flying directly to Antarctica replaces the traditional maritime crossing of the Drake Passage, allowing the expedition to dedicate more of its schedule to exploring the Peninsula.
The aircraft departs only when suitable weather conditions are available. From Day 2 onward, the expedition is ready to fly as soon as the captain determines that a safe weather window has opened.
Should conditions prevent departure, guests remain at Weskar Lodge while awaiting the opportunity to continue.
The longer expedition duration is specifically designed to provide flexibility for these weather-dependent operations.
After reaching King George Island, travelers begin their voyage aboard Aureum, the expedition ship accommodating a maximum of 36 guests.
Day 3: Entering the World of the Antarctic Peninsula
Day 4: Wildlife Encounters Along the Antarctic Coast
Day 5: Through the Spectacular Gerlache Strait
Day 6: Iceberg Passages and Hidden Antarctic Landscapes
Day 7: The Quest for 66°33'S
Day 8: Discovering Antarctica's Remote Southern Realm
Day 9: A Final Chapter of Antarctic Discovery
Day 10: Flying Back to Chilean Patagonia
Day 11: Farewell to Patagonia
