Embark aboard Aqua Lares on an extraordinary Arctic expedition through the remote wilderness of Svalbard and the dramatic northern coast of Norway. This immersive voyage combines towering glaciers, drifting pack ice, remarkable wildlife encounters, historic whaling sites, and isolated polar settlements while navigating one of the most pristine regions on Earth. Designed as a flexible expedition, the route adapts to weather, wildlife activity, and sea ice conditions, creating an authentic exploration experience filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable Arctic scenery. Travel Tips Dress in warm layers suitable for rapidly changing Arctic weather conditions. Waterproof outerwear, thermal clothing, insulated gloves, and sturdy boots are essential. Bring binoculars and a camera with extra batteries for wildlife photography. Expect itinerary flexibility due to weather, wildlife, and sea ice conditions. Motion sickness remedies are recommended for open-water crossings. Prepare for active shore landings on rocky beaches and uneven tundra terrain. Weather Preparedness Arctic conditions can change quickly from sunshine to snow, fog, strong winds, and freezing temperatures. Average temperatures typically range from 28°F to 45°F (-2°C to 7°C), although wind chill may make it feel significantly colder. Travelers should pack thermal base layers, waterproof outerwear, insulated accessories, warm hats, gloves, and proper cold-weather footwear for zodiac excursions and outdoor exploration. Fitness Requirements This expedition is suitable for travelers with moderate fitness levels and an adventurous spirit. Guests should feel comfortable boarding zodiac tenders, walking on uneven terrain, navigating rocky shorelines, and participating in active outdoor excursions. Some activities may involve moderate hiking or extended periods outdoors in cold conditions.

Day by day

Day 1: Embarkation - Longyearbyen
Your expedition begins in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town and the symbolic gateway to the Arctic wilderness. Surrounded by rugged mountains, expansive tundra, and icy fjords, this isolated settlement introduces travelers to the dramatic beauty of Svalbard. Upon boarding Aqua Lares, guests settle into expedition life while preparing for an unforgettable journey into the High Arctic. As the ship departs the harbor, civilization slowly disappears behind vast frozen landscapes and remote coastlines. The evening offers spectacular views of Arctic scenery while the expedition team introduces the adventures ahead. The sense of remoteness becomes stronger with every mile traveled northward, setting the tone for a voyage defined by exploration, wildlife encounters, and constantly changing polar conditions.
Day 2: Gravneset & Smeerenburg
Today’s exploration focuses on the fascinating Arctic whaling history of Gravneset and Smeerenburg. At Gravneset, guests step ashore among dramatic mountain scenery and glacier-filled landscapes while learning about one of Svalbard’s most important historical whaling areas. Ancient burial grounds and remnants of early hunting activities reveal stories of survival in one of the harshest environments on Earth. Guided excursions provide insight into the cultural and historical importance of the site while seabirds and Arctic wildlife bring life to the surrounding tundra. Later, continue toward Smeerenburg, once a thriving Dutch whaling settlement during the 17th century. The ruins scattered across the coastline offer a glimpse into the lives of Arctic explorers and merchants who once operated in these remote waters. Combined with breathtaking scenery, the day delivers an unforgettable blend of history, wildlife, and polar exploration.
