A major milestone for sustainable polar travel has taken place in southern Chile: the Magellan Discoverer—the first hybrid-electric expedition ship ever built in the Americas—has officially floated out at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia. Fully constructed in Chile, the vessel represents a new chapter for eco-conscious Antarctic exploration and innovation in the region’s shipbuilding industry.
Designed for Boutique and Responsible Exploration
The Magellan Discoverer operates on a forward-looking hybrid-electric system which links diesel power units to lithium-ion marine battery technology for better fuel efficiency and reduced underwater disturbance and lower carbon output. Smart energy recovery systems—such as reusing engine heat for onboard comfort—highlight the vessel’s forward-thinking design.
Accommodating 76 guests and 67 crew members across 94 meters, the ship blends Patagonian and Antarctic inspiration with contemporary interiors designed by Tomas Tillberg Design. Panoramic windows, natural materials, and a refined, minimalist aesthetic immerse guests in the wild landscapes outside.
A New Era of Antarctic Exploration Awaits
The Magellan Discoverer will operate exclusive Antarctica Air-Cruises after its outfitting and final trials. This service lets travelers fly from Punta Arenas to King George Island without passing through the Drake Passage to extend their time in Antarctica.
The Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise, the Polar Circle Air-Cruise and the Inaugural Air-Cruise make up the main expeditions of the program. These expeditions focus on small group guided exploration that provides authentic experiences of Antarctica's unspoiled wilderness.
For travelers inspired to experience the Antarctica expedition firsthand—including iconic wildlife encounters and activities that define polar adventure—we invite you to explore our site to discover detailed itineraries, travel dates, and special programs aboard this remarkable vessel.
